As you have seen from previous posts such as Social Networks are the 1st to spread the news of Bin Laden’s Death and The Social Media Buzz around the Royal Wedding, Social Media is becoming the fastest way to spread news and information. It seems to be the way forward and even the Gardaí are getting involved. Ireland’s national police force have set up a Twitter account @gardatraffic prior to the historic visit of Queen Elizabeth and President Obama this week.
The Gardaí, who already have over 3,000 followers, plan to use their Twitter account as one of the main channels to notify the public of the planned and unforseen disruptions to vehicle and pedestrian travel during these historic visits.
They set up their Twitter account on May 9th to accompany their already existing Facebook account. Although they may not be your typical candidates for Twitter, this demonstrates that they are aware that social networks are becoming the fastest and most effective medium for reaching the public.
